A 28-year-old former teacher has been jailed after pleading guilty to seven charges of sexual offences.

William Caton, of Rose Lane in Diss, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Friday 24th April, where he was sentenced to a total of five years’ imprisonment.

He has also been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and been made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10-years.

The sentencing comes after Caton pleaded guilty to four counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and three counts of sexual activity with a child.

The offences relate to one victim, a girl under 16 years.

DC Georgina Read from the Safeguarding and Investigations Unit, who was the officer in charge of the case, said: “William Caton abused his position of trust as a teacher, manipulating a child who was entrusted in his care.

“The impact of this has been significant on the victim, who has shown great courage throughout the investigation. I hope Caton’s conviction provides her with some comfort and closure.

“We understand how difficult it can be for a victim of sexual abuse to disclose it. I would like to assure the public that all reports are investigated by specially trained detectives who will act robustly against perpetrators. We can also help victims access specialist support services that they may need.”
