A man from Felixstowe has been jailed for 28 years, with a further six years on extended licence, after being convicted of a series of serious sexual offences.

James Hawker, 45, of Cornwall Road, was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on Friday 12 December after being found guilty of 11 counts of sexual assault, four counts of rape, four counts of assault by penetration and one count of attempted rape.

At an earlier hearing, Hawker had also pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images of children and one count of voyeurism. The offences took place between August 2008 and December 2020.

During the three-week trial, the court heard Hawker had made more than 210,000 indecent images of children. The offences first came to light in February 2021, when the first victim reported the abuse to police.

Detective Sergeant Jennifer Botting, the investigating officer, described the crimes as “horrific” and praised the bravery of the victims and their families for coming forward and giving evidence.

She added that Suffolk Constabulary remains committed to thoroughly investigating all reports of sexual abuse and supporting victims throughout the process.

Anyone affected by sexual abuse can report offences online via Suffolk Police or seek support from the Suffolk Independent Sexual Advisory Service, whether or not they choose to report to police.
