Firefighters in Suffolk have been tackling a blaze which set fire to 500 tonnes of muck.

At around 5:30am on Tuesday (19 August), Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received a call regarding a fire in the open at Rake Heath Farm in Eriswell, Suffolk.

A water carrier from Newmarket and a fire engine from Mildenhall were mobilised to attend.

By 6am, firefighters reported that 500 tonnes of muck was well alight and had spread to nearby fence posts.

Two hose reel jets were used to fight the blaze, while the Elveden Estate attempted to get a water bowser onsite.

Farm machinery was used to break up the heap of muck to create smaller, more manageable piles.

An SFRS safety officer was in place to ensure the farm machinery was not operated for too long to avoid overheating.

By 10am, the firefighting ceased, and the incident became a "watching brief".

As of 2pm, the farmer was given a safety advice form and was briefed by SFRS about maintaining a watching brief on the incident.

The site is due to be reinspected by crews on Tuesday evening (19 August).
