East Suffolk Council to tackle illegal parking outside schools
The council says it's aiming to protect children's safety
East Suffolk Council is taking action against parents who park illegally outside schools, aiming to improve children’s safety through increased enforcement and awareness.
The motion was brought by Cllr Keith Robinson on 22nd July, highlighting the neglect of parking restrictions around schools, which are rarely enforced.
Robinson, a Conservative member for Oulton Broad, stressed the importance of enforcing double yellow lines, particularly near schools, where the lack of compliance poses real dangers to children.
In February, Trimley St Martin Primary School staff raised daily concerns about student safety due to illegal parking.
Headteacher Samantha Ross noted, "As soon as we open those doors, are those children going to get home safely?"
The council has agreed to conduct frequent patrols during peak school times and launched a public awareness campaign to reinforce parking discipline.
The initiative received strong cross-party support from councillors who shared similar experiences within their own wards.
Cllr Paul Ashton from the Green-led administration emphasized resource allocation to address parking issues, stating, "We know there's a big problem with parking and dropping off kids."
While the council's efforts will focus initially on the enforcement of parking restrictions, Cllr Seamus Bennett highlighted the need to assess other factors contributing to near misses around schools.
By working closely with schools and communities, East Suffolk Council aims to secure safety for children and reduce challenges faced by educational staff and parents.
