Large wildfire on Dunwich Heath prompts major emergency response
Public urged to stay away as crews work to contain blaze

A significant wildfire on Dunwich Heath has led to an extensive emergency response involving 14 fire appliances and various specialist equipment.
The fire broke out on 29th July 2026 and quickly spread south-west towards St James' Church, off Westleton Road.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, along with supporting stations, have deployed Unimogs, drones, and 4x4 quad bikes to manage the blaze.
Fire crews from Leiston, Reydon, Halesworth, and several other neighbouring towns are actively engaged in firefighting efforts.
The public is advised to avoid the area to keep access routes clear for emergency services.
Residents affected by smoke are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed.
Firefighting operations have achieved stability, with firebreaks up to 12 metres wide completed around the site’s perimeter.
Emergency services are prepared to continue operations for several more days while monitoring conditions closely.
Support from voluntary organisations, including the Rapid Relief Team and the British Red Cross Norfolk team, has been invaluable in providing welfare supplies and assistance.
No casualties have been reported, and local roads and footpaths remain closed.
As fire crews continue to tackle hotspots, those in the vicinity are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to health advice if impacted by smoke.
The Dunwich Flower Festival, scheduled for the weekend, has been cancelled due to the incident.
Emergency responders ask the public to cooperate fully, enabling efficient management of the situation.
