Investigation underway into Bury St Edmunds chemical spill

Investigators are looking into what caused a chemical spill in Bury St Edmunds.

Emergency services were called to a commercial premises in Western Way at 3.14pm yesterday afternoon (Saturday 23rd May 2026).

No one was injured but firefighters did have to use specialist equipment to make the scene safe.

A spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said:

"Specialist hazardous materials procedures were implemented, with crews using breathing apparatus to safely ventilate the building and dilute the chemical spill.

"Partner agencies including the Police, Environment Agency and the UK Health and Safety Executive were informed.

"The incident was brought under control shortly after 4:20pm, with no significant escalation or wider risk to the public reported.

"Investigations into the cause of the spill are ongoing."
