Arrest warrant issued for man convicted of offensive messages to Lowestoft MP
Anwar Mohammed failed to appear at Ipswich Crown Court for sentencing
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Anwar Mohammed, a 59-year-old from Lowestoft, after he failed to attend his sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court for sending 'grossly offensive' messages to MP Jess Asato.
Mohammed, of Anchor Street, was scheduled for sentencing at noon on 3rd July, but did not appear, prompting Judge David Wilson to issue a warrant for arrest without bail, effective from 2pm.
He had been found guilty last month of sending indecent or grossly offensive electronic communications aimed at causing distress to the Lowestoft MP and her children, an act carried out on 3rd July 2024, the day before the General Election.
Additional charges regarding messages threatening death or serious harm have been filed but not pursued further in court.
Following his conviction, Ms Asato highlighted the critical importance of respectful political discourse, stating, “People who want to serve their communities and stand for elected office should be able to do so without having their safety put at risk.”
Mohammed was not represented in court during the proceedings.
