A 77-year-old cyclist has died after suffering serious injuries in a road traffic collision in Sudbury earlier this month.

Emergency services were called at around 2.30pm on Tuesday, 5 May, following reports of a crash involving a bicycle and a white Peugeot Expert van on the A134, close to the staggered junction at Mills Lane.

The cyclist, later identified as Ian Simpson, from Hartest, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for medical treatment. Police have confirmed he passed away on Sunday, 24 May.

A 41-year-old man from Essex was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. He was taken to the Police Investigation Centre in Bury St Edmunds and has since been released while officers await the results of blood tests.

Police investigations remain ongoing and officers are still urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Drivers who were travelling in the area at the time and have dashcam footage are also being asked to check their recordings for anything that could help the investigation.
