A Warrington man who ran away from police during a road safety crackdown has been sentenced for drug offences and driving crimes.
21-year-old Alan Evans was riding a moped when he was signalled by police to pull over during a road safety operation. After failing to comply, Evans fled from the scene on foot, and was later found to be in possession of Class A drugs.
The safety operation being carried out at the time was known as 'Operation Lawmaker,' designed to target anti-social behaviour of off-road vehicles in the area.
Evans was caught riding a white Yamaha XF 50 moped in poor condition in the Chester Road area of Warrington. After police attempted to make him stop the vehicle, he headed towards School Brow on foot.
Officers then found Evans nearby on Chester Road, and collected his abandoned belongings on the way; this included a biker helmet, gloves and jacket.
The 28-year-old was detained and subjected to a roadside drug test, where traces of cannabis came back as positive. Officers also found and seized two bags of cocaine.
Evans was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, driving without insurance, driving under the influence of drugs and possession of Class A drugs
He appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court on Friday 24 October where he pleaded guilty and was handed a community order and a 36-month driving disqualification.
Police Sergeant Andy Griffiths, of the Constabulary’s Motorcycle Unit, said:
“The unsafe use of high-powered vehicles on our roads and in pedestrian areas is a priority issue for our officers and I want to reassure the public that we will continue to take a robust approach with those causing such harm within your communities.”
