Vital open water safety training rolls out to all schools in Cheshire
It will help spread the word on keeping young people safe in water
Children in Cheshire are going to get specialist water safety training in what's being described as a UK first.
At least one teacher and two pupils from every state high school will learn to spot hidden dangers in rivers, reservoirs and open water.
Cheshire's Police and Crime Commissioner has provided the funding.
"The reality is that people get into cold open water spaces and have these cold water shocks which lead to all sorts of horrible consequences", says PCC Dan Price.
"It's about preparing people as best as we can to be able to be ok should that happen to them."
Dozens have lost their lives in open water so far this year and drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children.
The year-long programme will begin in September.
