Research findings have unveiled the extent of untreated hearing loss in Cheshire and Staffordshire, revealing a significant impact on individuals' lives in these regions.

In Cheshire, approximately 45,000 people are living with hearing loss without using hearing aids, while Staffordshire has around 47,000 individuals experiencing similar issues.

Only 49.5% of those with hearing loss choose to utilise hearing aids, leaving half struggling to cope without necessary support.

This avoidance of treatment often stems from emotional barriers such as embarrassment and stigma, alongside concerns about potential costs.

These lingering concerns cause many to delay seeking help for years, despite the detrimental effects untreated hearing loss can have, including depression, poor mental wellbeing, fatigue, and social isolation.

Furthermore, untreated hearing loss poses risks to career progression and earnings, as individuals fear it may hinder job performance and opportunities for advancement.

Findings on hearing aid use

The research highlights the benefits of hearing aids, with many users regretting not acting sooner.

Upon use, 82% of hearing aid users report satisfaction, while 71% express a desire to have received treatment earlier.

Quality of life improvements documented include better social connections, enhanced mental and emotional health, and reduced fatigue.

However, stigma around wearing hearing aids and concerns about their affordability continue to be barriers for many.

Impact on mental health and careers

Ben Yang, an audiologist involved in the study, underscores the importance of early intervention for hearing loss:

"A lot of people put off dealing with hearing loss because it creeps up slowly, but by the time they notice it, it’s already affecting conversations, confidence and daily life."

Yang highlights that hearing aids enable individuals to regain confidence, reconnect socially, and feel less exhausted.

The data demonstrates the link between hearing health and career success, with 92% of working hearing aid users noticing improvements in job performance.

For those feared stigma, hearing aid users rarely face mocking, contrasting with non-users who often encounter negative social reactions.

The research presents a substantive call to action for those delaying treatment, emphasising the positive effects of addressing hearing loss proactively.
