Critical incident at University Hospitals of North Midlands

Public urged to use alternative healthcare services

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has declared a critical incident amidst unprecedented demand at Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital.

The strain on services is attributed to several factors, such as a surge in patient numbers and delayed hospital discharges, further compounded by substantial pressure on local ambulance services.

These elements are adversely affecting the hospitals' capability to move patients efficiently and ensure timely care.

The hospitals are prioritising urgent and emergency care and have redeployed staff to support the most burdened areas.

Additionally, they are collaborating with NHS partners to enhance patient flow.

The public is urged to access healthcare appropriately during this period, utilising NHS 111, local pharmacies, GP services, or walk-in centres for non-life-threatening conditions.

Emergency departments are reserved for serious or life-threatening situations only.

The trust extends gratitude to the staff for their unwavering commitment, and appreciates the support and understanding of patients and communities.
