Demolition begins on "eyesore" factory buildings in Stoke-on-Trent
Long-awaited clearance of hazardous site begins
The demolition of the Old Twyford Buildings in Etruria has started, clearing what has been described as an eyesore by many.
Situated along the A500 in the Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone, the former factory buildings have posed a risk for years and sustained damage from a fire 14 years ago.
Council permission was granted this summer to proceed with the phased demolition to minimize surrounding impact.
Dave Clarke, a council officer, reported that the buildings had been vacant for years, showing significant deterioration and long-term neglect.
The demolition application was filed by WS Storage Solutions Limited.
Reddevelopment efforts continue, focusing on brownfield land and infrastructure investment within the enterprise zone.
Until 2022, industrial materials were packed within huge concrete bales on-site, with unclear contents.
Due to collapse risk, the fire service has monitored the site using drones equipped with temperature sensors.
For many locals and governing bodies alike, the clearance had been overdue and the site had tarnished the city's image for too long.
