Two Stoke-on-Trent councillors have defected to Reform UK.

Dr Chandra Kanneganti CBE and Heather Blurton announced their decision on social media today (14th January).

Councillor Kanneganti was a member of the Conservative Party and represents Goldenhill and Sandyford.

He was also the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent in 2021-2022.

Councillor Blurton was a member of the Conservative Party, but left in November 2025 to sit as an Independent.

She represents Bucknall and Eaton Park.

Councillor Chandra Kanneganti's statement

Today, he posted on his Facebook, "Today I have joined Reform UK because I believe our country, and our city, need honest, practical politics that put people first, not the protection of a failing status quo.

"I entered politics to serve the people of Stoke-on-Trent, a city that welcomed me and my family with open arms many years ago. That commitment to local residents has not changed. What has changed is my belief that Labour and Conservative are no longer delivering the real change people were promised.

"For too long we have heard talk of reform while everyday concerns go unanswered: the cost of living, pressures on public services, immigration, and ensuring taxpayers’ money is spent wisely and responsibly. These issues matter deeply to residents, and they deserve to be addressed seriously and honestly.

"Reform UK is prepared to speak plainly, listen to communities, and offer clear, common sense solutions.

"I am excited to be part of a growing movement that is willing to do things differently for the good of our city and our country.

"My focus remains the same, working hard for the residents of Goldenhill and Sandyford. I look forward to continuing that work with renewed purpose and determination."

Councillor Heather Blurton's statement

Councillor Heather Blurton posted, "When I left the Conservative Party in November last year, I did so because I could no longer, in good conscience, say that it was serving the best interests of our city or our residents. That decision was not taken lightly, but it was the right one.

"Since then, I have continued to serve on Stoke-on-Trent City Council, taking time to reflect, listen to residents, and consider where I could be most effective in delivering real change for our communities.

"Over recent weeks, it has become even clearer to me that only one party is serious about putting family, community, country, and Stoke-on-Trent first. That party is Reform UK.

"That is why I am proud to announce that I have joined Reform UK.

"This decision is about values, priorities, and standing up for local people who feel let down by politics as usual. I remain fully committed to working hard for residents, speaking up for our city, and making sure your voices are heard.

"I look forward to continuing to serve you and to building a stronger future for Stoke-on-Trent together."
