Steven Nzonzi, one of Stoke City's 'finest ever players' has completed a fairytale return to the Club.
The 36-year-old, who has signed a one-year contract, is set to spend the remainder of August working towards match fitness having been part of the Club’s pre-season training since late-July, after which he is expected to be available for first team selection for the remainder of the campaign.
Renowned as one of the Club’s best ever, Nzonzi played an integral role as the Potters recorded respective Premier League finishes of 13th, 9th and 9th during his three seasons with the Club.
The 6ft 5ins midfielder went on to win the Europa League with Sevilla in 2016 and the World Cup with France two years later.
Sporting Director, Jonathan Walters, a former teammate of Nzonzi in ST4, said: “Steven needs no introduction to Stoke City fans. To have the opportunity to bring in a player of such talent and experience, a World Cup and Europa League winner as well as a Potters’ legend, is a huge boost for everyone at the Club.
“It’s going to take some time to get his fitness to a level where he’s ready to play, so – whilst we’re excited to see him back – we’ll all need to be patient for a number of weeks yet.
“Steven’s story with Stoke City is yet to be finished and, when he does return, there’ll be thousands of passionate Potters thrilled to welcome him back.”
Nzonzi, who will wear the same number 15 squad number he vacated ten years ago, will be reunited with supporters ahead of kick-off in the Championship opener against Derby County on Saturday, with fans requested to be in their seats by 2.45pm.
He said: “For me, it feels like I have come back home. I have played football for some huge clubs in my career, but the best relationship I had with supporters was at Stoke City.
“I was always very grateful for that, as I am to Jon Walters for everything he has done to make this move happen. It gives me huge motivation to help the Club be successful this season.
“It’s important now, however, not to look back too much, but instead to look forward. I will, of course, be a different player to ten years ago, but I know I have lots to give to the team.
“To be ready and conditioned for Championship football, I need to complete my own pre-season. Once that is done, I can’t wait to play in-front of the Stoke City fans again.”
