Staffordshire Police breathalysed almost 2,000 drivers at the roadside last year, making it one of the highest numbers of tests in the UK.

In December, 150 suspected drink-drivers were arrested.

Of the 1,998 drivers tested in the county, 7.5% were over the limit, or rerudes or failed to do the test sufficiently.

Chief Inspector Scott McGrath, from Staffordshire's roads policing team, said: “These results paint a very clear picture of our work on a national scale in targeting drink drivers relentlessly in Staffordshire.

“For us, one serious or fatal collision is one too many.

"That’s why we’ve been robust in our efforts to target those putting themselves and others at risk on our road networks, and why we continue to do so with such focus in 2026."
