Staffordshire and Cheshire to get millions for transport upgrades
Ministers say the money will help people get to work, school, shops and family more smoothly
Towns and rural areas across the North West are set to benefit from a major government investment aimed at making journeys quicker, easier and more reliable.
An extra £14.9 million is being allocated to the region, the biggest uplift of any area in the country.
The funding is part of a 2.3 billion pound plan to improve local transport connections under the Government’s Plan for Change.
Ministers say the money will help people get to work, school, shops and family more smoothly, while opening up access to jobs and education.
Councils will be able to decide how best to use the money, with options ranging from new zero-emission buses and safer pedestrian crossings to better lighting and projects to ease congestion.
In the North West, Lancashire Combined County Authority will receive £7.6 million, Cheshire West and Chester £1.7 million, and Staffordshire £3.4 million.
Officials say the investment will allow councils to move forward with projects that matter most to their communities, helping to grow local economies and strengthen everyday connections across towns and rural areas.
"better connect our people in cities, towns and villages"
Rose McArthur, Director of Transport and Highways, Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “Cheshire West and Chester Council warmly welcomes this multi-year Local Transport Grant capacity funding announcement.
"This funding certainty and value will allow us to better deliver on our mission-led ambition to create brilliant transport services and opportunities for integrated travel for every person across our Borough. "
"We will be able to work with and support our rural communities to be better connected with appropriate options, to further realise our local ambition for integrated public transport for all.
"We can continue to work as a data-led transport team, with the capacity needed to progress key strategic transport and highways investments identified across the Borough.
"Using this additional investment, we can better connect our people in cities, towns and villages with the employment, education and leisure opportunities across our Cheshire and Warrington sub region, supporting our cross-border economies and ambitions.”
