Serious overnight crash closes part of M6 in Staffordshire
Specialist recovery crews are working alongside police officers
The M6 in Staffordshire remains closed southbound between junctions 13 (Stafford) and 12 (Cannock) following a serious collision involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and a van late last night (3 November).
The incident occurred at around 11:40pm, prompting a major emergency response.
Staffordshire Police are leading the investigation and remain at the scene this morning (4 November) to carry out collision inquiries.
Specialist recovery crews are working alongside police officers to clear debris and reopen lanes as soon as it is safe to do so.
However, National Highways has advised that the full carriageway closure is expected to remain in place until before midday, while recovery work and emergency barrier repairs are completed.
Motorists are currently facing delays of up to two hours, with around four miles of congestion stretching back towards junction 14 (Stafford).
There are also significant delays on diversion routes, particularly through Penkridge and on approach to Gailey roundabout via the A449.
Diversion Route
Drivers are being advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol:
- Exit the M6 southbound at J13 and join the A449 southbound
- Continue to the junction with the A5 at Gailey
- Take the A5 eastbound and re-join the M6 southbound at J12
Motorists are urged to allow extra time for their journeys, plan ahead, and consider delaying travel if possible.
