Authorities are urging residents in Staffordshire to remain vigilant following a series of scam telephone calls impersonating financial institutions and police officers.

The warning comes after an individual from Stafford was deceived into purchasing £2,000 worth of gift cards on 6th March, after receiving calls from people claiming to be from Staffordshire Police and the Metropolitan Police.

Fraudsters often utilise apps that allow them to mask their phone numbers with identities of legitimate organisations, such as banks and law enforcement agencies.

Key signs of a fraudulent call include requests for bank card PINs or passwords, instructions to withdraw cash and post or deliver it, payments in vouchers or gift cards, and secrecy around the transaction.

Detective Sergeant Garry Jackson from the economic crime unit emphasizes the importance of sharing this warning widely: "We need your help to share this message far and wide - no bank, government department or police force will ask for bank details or cash to be transferred in secret or purchase items like gift cards on their behalf."

He highlighted that these fraudsters often target vulnerable and elderly individuals, urging reinforcement of the message among relatives and neighbors.

Jackson advises, "Scams like this can be very elaborate, very convincing and cruel. If you think someone is trying to scam you, tell someone straight away. Don't be pressured. Give yourself time to stop and think."

For individuals receiving suspicious calls, the advice is to hang up immediately and report the incident either through Report Fraud or by contacting 0300 123 2040 or 101 after ensuring the phone has disconnected or using a different phone.
