Recovery work continues in Sandyford after major fire
Council outlines how its supporting affected families
Recovery efforts in Sandyford are progressing as support is provided to families impacted by the major fire earlier this month.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council is leading the effort, with collaboration from Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and community organisations.
Some families have moved from emergency shelters to longer-term housing, including council-provided accommodation.
Support from the council includes access to accommodation, welfare, financial support, and managing environmental recovery and community assistance activities.
Ongoing Recovery Measures
A 24/7 helpline is available offering advice, information, and support.
Council members were recently at Goldenhill Working Men’s Club with MIND and Citizens Advice addressing resident concerns.
Support continues for residents affected by unsafe structures.
The council’s communities team contacts residents and offers assistance with practical matters like Blue Badge replacements.
Advice on asbestos remediation, property safety, and environmental recovery is provided.
Security measures are implemented at the site due to concerns over unauthorised access.
Street cleansing, waste management, and environmental recovery efforts are ongoing.
Fire Cause and Council Response
The fire, caused by a disposable barbecue, has led to inspections by the council’s Trading Standards team.
Councillor Jane Ashworth commented: “My thoughts remain with everyone whose lives have been affected by this devastating fire. Visiting the area and speaking to residents really brings home the impact this incident has had on families and the wider community."
