Ceramics giant to start churning out more pottery 'Made In Stoke'
They're upping production in their Stoke-on-Trent factory
A Stoke-on-Trent pottery firm, known across the world for decades, has pledged to start producing more of its items in the capital of ceramics, Stoke-on-Trent.
Portmeirion has refreshed its logo and created a new backstamp across its Spode brand in what it calls a move ' to further reinforce the Group’s commitment' to increasing its Stoke-based manufacturing and production.
As part of its 2024 preliminary results, Portmeirion outlined a series of priorities to position the Group for longterm, profitable growth. To underpin its focus on these priorities it launched its ‘Made in Stoke-on-Trent’ strategy which aims to significantly increase UK production of its branded tableware products over the next 24-months.
Mike Raybould, Chief Executive Officer at Portmeirion Group, commented: “Spode was born in Stoke-on-Trent which has been the centre of the British pottery industry since the 18th Century, and we have always championed British manufacturing. Despite being an internationally recognised brand, this pledge marks our latest step in cementing Stoke-on-Trent at the heart of everything we do and honouring our deep-seated heritage, exceptional craftsmanship and iconic designs.
“It’s been an extremely challenging few years for the industry with soaring energy prices, wider cost pressures and stringent net-zero timelines and requirements. It’s our responsibility to ensure Stoke-on-Trent’s legacy of craft continues to thrive for generations to come. That’s why we continue to call for meaningful government support including a fairer deal on energy costs and temporary exemption from climate change requirements whilst grants are put into place to support the sectors transition to cleaner technology. As we continue to execute on our own growth plans this targeted support would be invaluable in helping to ensure a more sustainable future for the British pottery and ceramics industry.”
In March 2025, Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Gareth Snell, launched his ‘Turnover Team’ campaign encouraging consumers to be aware of the country a ceramic product is manufactured in, in order to ensure the industry is consumers to be aware of the country a ceramic product is manufactured in, in order to ensure the industry is championed in the UK for years to come.
The new logo and backstamp – which will now reference Spode’s birth date, 1770, and boast a new ‘Made in Stoke-on-Trent, England’ mark – will be launched on a limited-edition mug in Spode’s best-selling ‘Blue Italian' in June 2025 and will start to transition onto key ranges during the second half of the year.
