Potters 'Arf runner dies after race in tragic incident

Organisers and city officials pay tribute following the death of participant in his 70s

A runner who took part in Sunday’s Potters 'Arf marathon has tragically died after falling ill at the end of the race.

The man, believed to be in his 70s, became unwell shortly after finishing the event. He received immediate attention from first responders and emergency services at the scene, before being taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital, where he sadly passed away.

Another participant was also taken to hospital suffering from suspected hyperthermia and is currently undergoing treatment.

In a statement, race organisers HS Sport said:

"A runner at yesterday's race fell ill after finishing the race and, despite the best efforts of medical staff, sadly passed away after being taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital."

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with their family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. "We ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve their loss."

Stoke-on-Trent City Council also responded to the incident, offering condolences and support. A spokesperson said:

"All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. We will offer whatever support we can. "We would like to recognise the efforts of the event’s first responders and the emergency services who responded swiftly to provide treatment."
