A trapped pony in Stoke-on-Trent is recovering well after he was found trapped inside a tractor tyre by the RSPCA and local residents.

Animal Rescue Officer Nicola Riley was called to concerns about a pony who had become completely stuck inside a large tractor tyre lying on its side in a field.

When Nicola arrived, the pony was trapped inside the wheel and unable to free himself. His fur was extremely matted and dirty, and although he was breathing, he was clearly distressed.

Residents stepped in to help lift the heavy tyre while Nicola worked carefully to free the pony in stages.

“It was a very delicate rescue, “Nicola said. “The poor pony was completely wedged against the tyre and understandably very scared and uncomfortable.”

“We had to take a staggered approach to free him safely - first easing out his front feet, then carefully working his shoulder free before finally releasing his neck and front end. Thankfully, everyone worked really well together and we managed to get him out without causing any injury.”

After being freed, the dark coloured pony was initially a little wobbly and stood for a short while with his back end still inside the tyre before eventually managing to walk himself free completely.

The tyre was then moved to ensure it no longer posed a danger to animals in the field.

Nicola remained with the pony for an hour afterwards to monitor his condition, and ensure he had recovered from his ordeal.

“He soon returned to grazing and walking around the field again” Nicola added. “But this could have ended very differently, so I’m really grateful to the local residents who stopped to help.”
