Grandfather devastated by fire destruction in Mount Pleasant
Family urges fire safety after sheds burned down
An 85-year-old grandfather, Derek Blainey, has been left devastated after a wildfire destroyed sheds containing cherished belongings in the Mount Pleasant area.
The blaze erupted on Wednesday, 12th August, resulting in the evacuation of Derek and other people living along Nutbrook Avenue, West Parade, and Judith Grove.
The fire spread from a grass area near the A50, involving several fences, gardens, and garages.
An investigation into the cause of the fires is currently under way, with Staffordshire Police arresting three individuals in connection with separate incidents in Cannock, Rugeley, and Hednesford.
Derek’s daughter, Wendy Blainey, 58, expressed how deeply affected her father is by the loss. “He’s physically safe but that fire has destroyed decades of memories for him and all of us,” Wendy said. “Tools handed down by his father-in-law, some of my childhood belongings are now gone. One of the sheds even belonged to his dad. It destroyed his fence, the sheds, all his grass and blistered the conservatory. The flames and the roar of the fire were horrendous and there was nothing he could do. It’s really hit him now, and he’s been very upset.”
Derek himself conveyed the profound impact of the fire on his life, saying, “I’ve lost tools that meant the world to me, handed down by generations of family. It’s heart-breaking to think of everything that has been lost." He described the experience as, "Watching the flames, there was a feeling of helplessness. It’s something you never want to experience."
Authorities, considering the continuing rise in temperatures, are urging people not to light garden bonfires, avoid using disposable BBQs, and refrain from discarding rubbish or cigarettes irresponsibly.
