They received reports that a piece of metal had been flung at a bus.
Cheshire police officers believe that two youths, who were stood at farm gate on the A533, may have been firing a fishing weight using a sling shot.
They're urging any witnesses to call the police on 101 quoting IML 2239218.
PC Jack Pilkington, of Northwich Local Policing Unit, said: “This was a terrifying incident for all the passenger on the bus and we’re doing all we can to establish exactly what took place.
“The A533 is a busy road and as part of our enquiries we are keen to hear from anyone who believed they may have witnessed the incident.
“We’d also like to hear from anyone who was driving in the area between 3.40pm and 4pm and may have any dashcam footage of the suspects.”
