A man, who punched and strangled his mother during a domestic incident, has been jailed.

Colin Hargreaves, 37, of no fixed address, was sentenced to two years and two months behind bars at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Wednesday 14 January, after he was found guilty after a trial of intentional strangulation. He pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled drug of class A (cocaine), possessing a controlled drug of class B (cannabis), assault by beating, assaulting a constable in execution of duty and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

In August last year, police were called to the victim’s home in Goldenhill.

Hargreaves punched her in the face and put his hands around her throat. He ripped a television off the wall and damaged a bedroom door.

When the victim gave him £250, Hargreaves left the house.

In September last year, officers spotted Hargreaves in Milton. He acted aggressively against the officer and was arrested at the scene.

Now he’s been sent to prison.

Officers say they will continue to take robust action against those responsible for violence and domestic abuse across Staffordshire, working to support victims and to deliver positive outcomes through the criminal justice system.
