Man jailed for eight years after rape and strangulation in Crewe
Convict Fikadu Yemane placed on Sex Offender’s Register indefinitely following trial
A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the rape and intentional strangulation of a woman in Crewe following a ten-day trial at Chester Crown Court.
Fikadu Yemane, 29, of Castleton Walk, Manchester, but originally from Eritrea, was convicted on Thursday, 27th August.
The case began on 16th July 2025 when Yemane met the 19-year-old victim in Manchester after arranging the meeting via social media. Known to each other, they agreed to travel to an address in Crewe accompanied by another man.
At the property, Yemane isolated the victim and forcibly took her to a bedroom, removed her clothes, and assaulted her. During the attack, he strangled her nearly to unconsciousness, leaving marks on her neck.
The second man returned and managed to intervene, allowing the victim to escape and call for help.
Yemane fled the scene and was on the run for six days before being located and arrested in Manchester. During this time, he tried to cover his tracks by changing the SD card in his phone.
Despite DNA evidence linking him to the crime scene, Yemane claimed the encounter was consensual. DNA from a condom and the victim's underwear, found in a wheelie bin at the scene, was linked to Yemane.
Detective Constable Jaymie Johnson remarked: “Fikadu Yemane’s behaviour was downright predatory. He took advantage of a vulnerable victim, who thought she was with someone she could trust, before going on to rape her and cause her serious injury when she bravely fought back against him.
Even when he was faced with evidence that directly linked him to the crime, that he had made active attempts to dispose of, Yemane caused further suffering to the victim by forcing her to relive the ordeal all over again during his subsequent ten-day trial.
With that in mind, I am glad that the jury have reached a guilty verdict on both counts and Yemane has been handed a significant custodial sentence. I do hope that now this case has reached its conclusion, the victim can be provided with a much-needed sense of closure and can begin to move forward with her life, knowing justice has been secured and her attacker has been held to account. I commend her for her bravery throughout the entire investigation.
Even upon Yemane’s eventual release from custody, he will remain the subject of the Sex Offender’s Register, meaning he will be monitored by specialist officers for the remainder of his life, ensuring that he never causes harm to another person.”
