A man has been jailed after admitting coercive control, false imprisonment and intentional strangulation following a sustained campaign of abuse against a woman in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

46-year-old Nathan Bate, of Caerphilly in Wales, was sentenced to five years and five months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday 16th October, after admitting abusing the woman over an extended period.

What happened

Officers were called in 2023 after the woman was dragged into a vehicle and assaulted by Bate.

On another occasion, Bate assaulted her and prevented her from attending A&E.

In May that year, the victim was again assaulted by Bate in a vehicle, managing to escape onto Silverdale Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme, before being convinced to re-enter the vehicle.

The victim was then held hostage by Bate, who strangled her in her own home.

Bate was arrested in June and denied the offences in interview, but later admitted what he had done in court.

Reaction

Speaking following sentencing, PC Deni Street, of Newcastle-under-Lyme local policing team, who was the officer in the case, said: "Bate was unrelenting in pursuing and controlling the victim who suffered immeasurable harm from his abuse."

"The survivor showed immense courage in coming forward to us and sharing what she had been through, so we could gather a significant amount of evidence against Bate which led to him pleading guilty in court," PC Street said.

"I hope the sentence goes someway in comforting the survivor and that she can continue to rebuild her life knowing Bate is serving a custodial sentence," PC Street said.

Alongside his prison term, Bate was made subject of a restraining order to prevent any future contact with the victim, and ordered to pay a surcharge of £228 upon his release.
