Woman jailed for stealing £140k from Stoke-on-Trent care home resident
She's been jailed for six-and-a-half-years
A woman has been jailed for stealing more than £140,000 from a Stoke-on-Trent care home resident.
62-year-old Lyndsey Newton has been sentenced to three-years-and-six-months in prison.
She was convicted of fraud by abuse of position.
The court heard how Newton took nearly £143,000 from the victim whilst in control of their finances at Barlaston care home.
The resident told staff at the care home, who told social workers, who then told the police.
An investigation by Staffordshire Police revealed that Newton had spent the cash on home improvements, a holiday to America, shopping trips and meals out.
“This was a clear abuse of trust by Newton, who was adamant she was entitled to the money", Detective Constable Jim Ward said.
He says Newton said she believed she had consent, despite the victim denying this "wholeheartedly".
He continued, “Sadly, the victim died before seeing the outcome of the case, but I hope it provides some closure for the wider family involved.
“Fraud has a devastating impact on victims, destroys livelihoods and severely affects relationships.
“I am glad Newton was handed a custodial sentence for her offending and hope the case demonstrates how we will continue to do all we can to support vulnerable victims and bring those responsible before the courts.”
