Stoke-on-Trent's Longton market is set for an £800,000 revamp.

The MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, Dr Allison Gardner, secured the investment in her campaigns to regenerate the town centre.

The money will be used to plug leaks in the roof of the Grade 2 listed Victorian building and improve shop fronts.

The refurbishments are scheduled to start this year.

Dr Allison Gardner says the market is a crucial part of the town's identity: "The market is too important to Longton’s future prosperity to be allowed to decline in the way that other markets have done, both locally and nationally.”

“The indoor market is a crucial part of Longton’s identity, a vital reminder of the town’s story."

Local councillor, Chris Robinson says, "People love shopping here because they know and trust the traders on a face-to-face basis. They often share jokes and stories. These are friendships that start in the market and last for years."

One stallholder whose family have traded there for 56 years, Mrs Jan Carrarini, says the future of the market is bright: "This is great news. We’re grateful for all the hard work that’s gone on behind the scenes. It means a brighter future for the market and the town.”
