Inquest continues into death of baby at Royal Stoke Hospital

An inquest is being held into the death of a baby boy following an emergency caesarean section.
George Dosanjh died at the Royal Stoke University Hospital on December 3, 2022, just a few days after being born premature.
His mum, Charlotte Hird, from Stafford, had gone into labour at 34 weeks, and medics at the Royal Stoke decided to carry out the c-section due to difficulties with the delivery.
Following the birth, George was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit, but sadly there was nothing staff could do to save him.
An inquest into the death heard a written statement from Charlotte, who said she could not understand how he had died as he ‘seemed to be happy and healthy’.
She also expressed her sadness at being unable to hold her son due to him being placed in an incubator.
Pathologist Dr Jo McPartland gave the medical cause of death as multiple organ failure and hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, due to placental abruption and fatal head impaction.
The post-mortem examination revealed that George had suffered fractures to his skull and other bones, but these were not considered to have been fatal injuries.
Dr McPartland explained that George had become separated from the placenta, meaning he was not receiving any oxygen until the c-section was carried out.
Dr Danielle O’Neill, who was the senior registrar in the delivery suite, told the inquest that it had been a very difficult delivery that had required a further incision.
The inquest, at County Buildings in Stafford, continues.
