Ian Cooper has resigned as Staffordshire County Council's leader following his suspension from Reform UK.

The former council leader was under investigation last week after activist group 'Hope not Hate' claimed to have found posts on X allegedly linked to Ian Cooper which they say was sharing, engaging and posting racist social media content.

Martin Murray, the previous Deputy Leader, will replace Cooper until a permanent leader is appointed in the new year.

Cooper will now sit as an independent county councillor.

Councillor Martin Murray said: “I recognise that these are challenging circumstances and the strength of feeling surrounding recent events.

“Let me assure you that my commitment to deliver plans for a better Staffordshire remains absolute, and to represent all residents fairly and with respect.

“My first and foremost priority is to ensure that Staffordshire County Council services continue without hinderance and to showcase Staffordshire as a fantastic county to live, visit and invest."
