Staffordshire prisoners sentenced to 36 more years after violent prison attack
Seven inmates launched a violent attack on two prisoners and prison officers at HMPYOI Werrington before climbing onto the prison roof
Seven prisoners who carried out a violent attack on two fellow inmates and prison officers at HMPYOI Werrington have been jailed for a further combined 36 years.
The group launched the attack in the prison yard during an exercise period on 29 June 2024.
CCTV showed one prisoner attempting to lure a victim into a corner before the group attacked him with weapons.
A second inmate was then dragged to the ground and assaulted.
One of the victims was stabbed in the head during the attack.
Prison officers intervened the victims were taken to hospital.
After the assault, all seven inmates climbed onto a roof, causing more than £2,000 worth of damage to barbed wire.
Four of them remained there for around six hours and threw objects and punches at officers when they were detained.
The men were sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday 10 July. They include:
- Rhys Griffiths, 18, admitted two counts of Section 18 wounding with intent, violent disorder and criminal damage, and has been jailed for seven years and nine months.
- Michael Desta, 19, admitted the same offences and has been jailed for five years and eight months.
- Jahmar Bryan, 19, admitted the same offences and has been jailed for five years.
- L’Vaion Peniston, 18, admitted the same offences and has been jailed for five years.
- Troy Pemberton-Bailey, 19, admitted the same offences and has been jailed for four years.
- Mason Martin, 19, admitted the same offences and has been jailed for four years and three months.
- Reehan Nezir, 19, admitted violent disorder and criminal damage and has been jailed for one year and three months.
Detective Constable Sam Booth, from Staffordshire Police's prisons investigation team, said: “These group of inmates launched particularly vicious and prolonged attacks on two other prisoners.
“If it was not for the intervention of officers on site, this incident could have had a very different ending.”
