Firefighters are warning of the dangers of deliberate fires after tackling a woodland blaze in Stoke-on-Trent.

Crews were called to two fires in an area of woodland off Thornhill Road, Bentilee, last Thursday evening (2nd April).

One fire measured 20 metres by 10 metres.

The other measured five metres by five metres.

Both are believed to have been started deliberately.

There were no reported injuries and the fires were extinguished.

Staffordshire Fire Service are now urging people to be more cautious, especially in warmer weather.

They say they were called to around 30 outdoor fires this Easter weekend, many of which could've been prevented.

Head of Prevent, Protect and Partnerships, Ian Read, said: "As the weather gets warmer, the risk of outdoor fire increases because the grass gets very dry, meaning fires can start and spread more quickly.

"This means that what might start as a bit of fun can have catastrophic consequences and put lives in danger.

"I would urge parents to speak to their children about the dangers of deliberately setting fires; it is an offence and we will support investigations by colleagues from Staffordshire Police."
