A man and a woman have been sentenced, after assaulting a member of the public and two police officers, in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Eamonn O’Rourke, 34, and Karly Parfitt, 19, both from Kidsgrove, Newcastle-under-Lyme, each admitted three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, at a court hearing in June.

O’Rourke also admitted possession of a controlled drug of class A (cocaine) and possession of a controlled drug of class B (cannabis).

At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday (7 September), he was sentenced to two years and three months in jail, while Parfitt was given a suspended prison sentence of one year and one month.

O’Rourke and Parfitt were fighting, on Wright Avenue, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on 6 June last year, when a member of the public tried to intervene.

They responded by seriously assaulting him.

They later punched, kicked and bit two police officers.

Police Constable Meakin said: “Assaults on members of our communities and emergency service workers will not be tolerated. I'm pleased that both offenders have been brought to justice for their actions.”
