A man has been jailed for six weeks after admitting a number of offences following an investigation by Cheshire Constabulary's Congleton Local Policing Team.

Michael Smart, from Kingsley Road in Ellesmere Port, appeared at Chester Magistrates on 20th October.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of using threatening, abusive and insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and to obstructing a constable.

A suspended sentence for a previous offence was also activated.

What happened in Congleton

Police were called to an address on Willow Street in Congleton on 18th October 2026, following reports that a man was inside without permission.

Officers identified the man as Smart.

Later that day, police received another call from an address on Davenshaw Drive in Congleton, reporting that a man had forced his way in.

An officer attended and spotted Smart on Brunswick Street.

The officer got out of his car and went to arrest Smart, who resisted arrest while he was being handcuffed.

Police said he continued to resist as officers restrained him, and was verbally abusive to them.

Custody and hospital

Police said Smart was verbally abusive while in custody and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

He was taken to hospital to be checked over.

Police said that while he was there he became verbally abusive to hospital staff, shouting and swearing at them.

PC Harry Beswick said: "Those in the busy A&E waiting area were visibly alarmed by his abusive behaviour so he was further arrested for public order offences."

PC Beswick also said: "His behaviour was out of order throughout the day and as a result he is now back behind bars serving not only this sentence for that truly awful behaviour, but for a previous offence."
