A suspected World War II bomb has been destroyed in a controlled explosion at a quarry in Barton-under-Needwood.

Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit carried out the operation at the site on Walton Lane yesterday evening.

A 900 metre cordon which had been set-up was scaled back before being removed completely.

Residents who had been evacuated due to safety concerns were then allowed back to their homes and local roads - including the A38 were re-opened.
