Newcastle MP to raise 'growing reports' of needle spiking with Home Secretary
It follows a spate of women reporting being spiked in the town centre
The MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme says he's 'very concerned' by needle spiking and increasing reports of women being targeted on nights out.
Adam Jogee has written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood asking for clarity on the government's stance to tackling needle spiking, and calling for a plan to address the situation locally and beyond.
His letter reads:
"Dear Secretary of State,
"I’m writing following recent reports of people being spiked by injection in Newcastle town centre. These incidents have caused understandable concern among residents and visitors, and several constituents have contacted me directly to express their fears about safety on nights out. This issue is, of course, not confined to Newcastle-under-Lyme.
"These spiking incidents are part of a wider and troubling trend that requires a strong and coordinated response from government. I would be grateful if you could set out what assessment has been made of the rise in reports of needle spiking, and what steps are being taken to support police forces and local authorities in tackling it. In particular, I would welcome details of how the Home Office is working with councils, licensing authorities and hospitality venues to prevent these crimes, ensure swift investigations, and provide proper support for victims. It would also be helpful to understand what national data is being collected on incidents of needle spiking, and how this is being shared between police forces, councils and health services.
"My constituents want reassurance that work is under way across government and with local partners to respond to this threat effectively. Spiking – whether by injection or other means – is a violation that causes real fear and trauma. It undermines public confidence in the night-time economy and disproportionately affects young women. Everyone should be able to enjoy a night out without fear of being attacked in this way. I look forward to your response outlining the Government’s actions and plans to address this serious matter. Yours sincerely, Adam Jogee MP"
Staffordshire Police have so far said they're looking at two women's reports.
We've also spoken with a woman from Stoke-on-Trent who says she was a victim at the venue last weekend, when a man brushed past her and spiked her with a needle.
Detectives are investigating and are asking for anyone who saw anything suspicious to come forward.
