A Swansea man has been sentenced to 27 months in prison after setting fire to his supported accommodation, putting lives in danger.

Matthew Draper, 40, admitted to using an accelerant to ignite a locker at The Wallich hostel, which caters to individuals with complex needs.

After initiating the fire, Draper remained at the scene, watching as the flames spread.

He pleaded guilty to charges of arson and arson with recklessness regarding the potential endangerment of life.

PC Gareth Bennett spoke on the incident, stating:

“Idiotic behaviour like that shown by Matthew Draper could have resulted in serious injury or even lives being lost on that day.

“This was completely reckless behaviour and it cannot be tolerated.

“He is clearly a danger to society and prison is the best place for him.”
