Captain Beany is swapping his famous bath of baked beans for a 73-mile walk around Neath Port Talbot to raise money for Pathfinders Cymru.

The challenge will take him across the borough, with members of the public invited to join him for parts of the route and stop at community café and “Bean Table” events.

“We wanted it to be a big bean party,” Captain Beany said. “Come along, see the schedule. We’re travelling the length and breadth of the borough.”

Pathfinders Cymru supports young people who are neurodiverse or have additional learning needs, providing activities and learning opportunities.

“We really need the money to keep it going,” Captain Beany said. “ It takes a lot of arrangement, a lot of expense, but it’s for the good of the children and young people.”

Captain Beany has raised about £150,000 for charity over the years, including through his 100-hour baked bean bath in 1986, which he says remains a Guinness World Record.

He said the community had continued to support his fundraising, with generations of people across Port Talbot growing up with the Captain Beany character.

“It’s invigorating to know that people will rally around,” he said. “Everybody helps out each other for whatever cause, whether it’s local or individual cases or group cases.”

He hopes that same community spirit will bring people out to support the walk, even if they cannot complete the full 73 miles.

The walk begins at Aberavon Beach on Monday, 21 September, with Captain Beany inviting people to join him for as much of the route as they can.
