A 36-year-old man from Newport has been sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison for causing the death of a young woman in a car crash.

Elliot Bristow was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court today after admitting to causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash occurred on 7th August 2024 on the B4245 Magor Road near Newport.

Bristow lost control of his vehicle, which collided with a stone wall, causing the death of the rear seat passenger, 24-year-old Olivia Louise Lewis from Ringland, Newport.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The front seat passenger sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.

PC Michelle Greatrex said, "This is a tragic case that has resulted in the needless loss of a life and my deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Olivia Louise Lewis.”

She added that Bristow showed “blatant disregard” for road safety by driving at twice the speed limit and under the influence of cannabis.

He also failed to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) about a medical condition and medication he was prescribed.

Bristow did not help at the crash site and took no responsibility for his actions.

PC Greatrex also expressed thanks to the injured passenger for her cooperation throughout the investigation.

In addition to his prison sentence, Bristow faces a driving disqualification of 14-and-a-half years.

He must pass an extended test to regain his licence.
