Gwent Police has confirmed five people are in hospital in a serious condition following a major car crash in Gelligaer.

The collision is believed to have taken place between two cars on Thursday evening.

The force is now appealing for any witnesses.

"The B4254, Gelligaer, remains closed between Penywrlod Road and Manor View and motorists are being advised to find alternative routes.

Gwent Police's full statement reads as:

"We’re appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision on the B4254, Gelligaer, Caerphilly county, at around 6.25pm on Thursday 23 April.

"Officers attended, along with the Welsh Ambulance Service, Air Ambulance and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

"The collision involved two cars – a red BMW Sport Coupe and a beige Jeep Avenger Summit.

"Five people were taken to hospital; three are believed to be in a serious condition.

"At the time of the collision, the red BMW was believed to be heading west towards Nelson, with the beige Jeep travelling in the opposite direction.

"Officers would like to hear from anyone with relevant CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage, or witnesses who may have seen either vehicle prior to the collision.
