Update as firefighters work round the clock to control Blaenavon wildfire

Firefighters are continuing to battle a large wildfire in Blaenavon, which has now spread across 220 hectares.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) says a full perimeter line, fortified by two additional water bowsers, has now been established around the fire to contain the spread.

Crews are said to be navigating tough terrain, employing specialist tactics to maintain the perimeter and control the blaze.

The Service says their operation is being hindered by hot, smoky, and demanding conditions, requiring continuous efforts from firefighters.

Special resources, including 4x4 vehicles, drones, and i-cutters, have been deployed to monitor and manage vegetation and support firefighting efforts.

SWFRS says it is collaborating closely with organisations like Natural Resources Wales, Public Health Wales, police, and local authorities.

According to the Met Office, shifting wind conditions might cause the smoke plume to move east towards Newport this afternoon. As temperatures drop overnight, the smoke could settle lower, impacting nearby communities.

Residents are advised to avoid the area and adhere to guidance. If affected by the wildfire smoke, staying indoors and keeping windows closed is being recommended.
