Investigation continues into death of one-year-old Jayla-Jean McLaren on Isle of Wight
Police are continuing their investigation into the death of one-year-old Jayla-Jean McLaren on the Isle of Wight.
A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport, were previously arrested on suspicion of murder following Jayla-Jean’s death.
The pair, who were initially released on conditional bail, remain under investigation for murder. They were due to answer bail on 13th February 2026.
On 27th January, the man and woman were further arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, as well as causing assault/ill-treatment/neglect/abandonment of a child or young person leading to unnecessary suffering or injury.
They are currently being held in custody.
Investigators urge the public not to speculate
Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Hunter has expressed awareness of the public interest in the case.
“We understand that cases such as this are incredibly concerning and upsetting. However, we kindly ask that you do not speculate on this case, as it could potentially impact any future court proceedings,” Hunter said.
