Dispersal order in place for South Coast derby

A dispersal order is in place in Southampton as part of the policing operation to help keep everyone safe during the match between Southampton and Portsmouth.
The Section 34 order has been authorised for a 12-hour period, which started at 7am today (14 September) and will run until 7pm tonight. It will cover the area outlined in the map – including the city centre and parts of Woolston and Bitterne.
Dispersal orders allow police to deal with any issues that could impact the safety of those attending the game more effectively and gives officers the power to order a person to leave the area with no return within a specified time period.
Officers will be patrolling the area throughout the duration of the order and will use these powers, where necessary, to prevent disruption and ensure the safety of fans, local residents and businesses.
Those who refuse to comply with the order are committing a criminal offence and are liable for arrest.

“We know most fans will want to enjoy the unique atmosphere this game brings without any trouble, and our policing operation is there to ensure that.
“This dispersal order is one of many tactics we have at our disposal to respond quickly and effectively to anyone who is intent on causing disruption and we hope it sends a clear message that we will be ready to take action to keep everyone safe.
