Sandown North councillor calls on government to take action as floods force people from homes
On Monday, residents were evacuated from Riverview Court after flooding reached high levels
A Sandown North councillor's calling on the government to take action after another surge of flooding forces elderly residents from their homes.
On Monday, residents were evacuated from Riverview Court, a gated mobile home community for over 45s off Avenue Road, after flooding reached high levels.
Debbie Andre, a Sandown North councillor, is telling us they're seeing "unprecedented rainfall".
She said: "It wasn't so long ago when we had further floods and it was said it was a once in 100 years event.
"I think we're beginning to rue the fact that we said that because only less than two years later, we're having similar events.
"We really do need the government to take a stand on this and they do need to recognise it.
"We need them to step up and we need government legislation to actually protect residents for the future.
"At the moment, we are dealing with the immediate situation."
It comes after flooding caused residents to have to evacuate their homes in Sandown.
Ms Andre was at the scene helping.
She said: "Honestly, I've never seen it as bad.
"It was nearly over the top of my wellies.
"There were manhole covers floating around and it was a pretty bad situation.
"Bearing in mind that the average age of residents there is probably around 70, I was very concerned for the welfare of the residents around there."
Monitoring is still taking place.
DEFRA have been contacted for comment.
