Police urge football fans to think before acting ahead of derby match
Southampton and Portsmouth will face each other this weekend
Police are urging football fans to think before they act at a derby match on Sunday.
Rival clubs, Southampton and Portsmouth, will face each other this weekend at St. Mary's Stadium.
Fans will be transported in coaches to St. Mary's - and can expect to see specially trained officers around the ground, wearing protective equipment - as well as non-visible tactics to keep everyone safe.
Simon Dodds, Temporary Assistant Chief Constable and the Gold Commander for the match, said: "We know there is that fierce rivalry there, but come and enjoy the day.
"Just make sure you do so without putting yourself in a position where you wake up the next day thinking, 'I'm going to get arrested, I'm going to be in front of the court, it's going to have an impact on my life and my career going forward'."
"By all means, enjoy what I hope is going to be a fantastic day, but be sensible and don't do anything that's going to get you in trouble with the police."
How are fans feeling ahead of the game?
Martin Sanders is a Saints fan and podcaster otherwise known as 'Football Martin'.
He said: "If I was going to speak to a player, I think it's just realising how much it means and there's a lot of players in that dressing room that maybe haven't played in the South Coast Derby - Kevin Shlotterbeck, new defender plays in his first South Coast Derby.
"James Ward-Prowse in the dressing room and he knows exactly what it's like playing the South Coast Derby.
"I'd be having James up at the front of the squad and telling everyone how important it is for the football club because he's lived and breathed it for many years.
"Every tackle means something that you have to really, really play for the shirt, play with passion, play with commitment, and every pass counts, every tackle counts, and you can't give them an inch.
"You want to give the St. Mary's crowd something to really roar about.
"Finding an early goal in a game like that could, for Southampton, open the flood gates, because when we're at it, and we're free flowing, we're such a good side to watch."
Marcus Edgar's a Pompey fan.
He said: "My ultimate is always do not lose.
"That's my first and foremost thought because I just never ever want to lose and in current form, for me, all the pressure's on them because they're the form team with the higher budget and a bit higher than us in the league, it's at their place.
"It's always a feisty affair, the atmosphere will be cracking, and as with every derby, you never know, anything can happen, and that's what I'm waiting for.
"My heart says obviously sneak a win, but I'd take a draw.
"It's not going to be easy, it's going to be a very, very tough fixture, and especially with everything going on at the moment, and them being an on-form team.
"So that worries me a little bit."
