A man in his 40s has died and a one-year-old girl remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a collision on the A34 near Sutton Scotney.

Hampshire Police were called to the southbound carriageway at 3.13pm on Friday, 23 October, after a Mercedes Sprinter van collided with a stationary Citroën Grand C4 Picasso that had broken down between Upper Bullington and Worthy Down, close to Sutton Scotney Services.

The driver of the Citroën was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A woman and two children who were travelling in the car were also injured in the collision. One of the children, a one-year-old girl, remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 33-year-old man from Walsall, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. He has since been released on bail with conditions until 4 December while police continue their investigation.

Detective Sergeant Oliver Cahill-Smith, from the Joint Operations Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the victims of this collision, one who has sadly died and another who is in a critical condition in hospital, and their loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

“We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened."

Police urge motorists to come forward

Investigators are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw the Citroën broken down on the A34 before the collision or witnessed the subsequent crash involving the Mercedes van.

Police are also asking drivers who travelled southbound between Upper Bullington and Worthy Down between 3pm and 3.20pm on Friday to check whether their dashcams captured anything that could help the investigation.
