A man has died after the lorry he was driving left a motorway slip road near Eastleigh and crashed onto land below.

It happened on the M3 southbound between junctions 13 and 14 at about 10 o'clock last night.

The vehicle was on the slip road for the M27 westbound when it left the carriageway and came to a rest on land just off Chestnut Avenue, which runs below the slip road.

Police say a man in his 20s died at the scene.

The two left lanes which lead to the slip road for the M27 westbound have been closed, but the two lanes on the right of the southbound carriageway remain open.

Chestnut Avenue has also been closed between Nightingale Avenue and Falkland Road.

The closures are expected to remain in place throughout today.

Officers are appealing for witnesses, especially anyone with dashcam footage, to contact them on the 101 number.
