A man has been arrested following a serious assault in Southampton.

The 23-year-old from Birmingham is being held on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Police received a call from the ambulance service at 5.10pm yesterday, after a man in his 20s sustained stab wounds during an assault in Argyle Road.

Additional stop and search powers, which are utilised under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, will cover the location captured in the map pictured, and will remain in place until 6.45pm on Saturday 17 May.

These powers give officers the ability to stop and search anyone in a designated location, without the restrictions of normal stop and search.

Speaking overnight, Chief Inspector Matthew Moss said: "We know how much of an impact a violent incident like this will have on the local community but rest assured there will be an increased and visible policing presence in the area and all available lines of enquiry are being progressed as a priority.

"Teams will be undertaking proactive patrols throughout the night and continuing into tomorrow. We urge anyone with concerns to please speak to our officers who will be more than happy to assist you.”

Police are appealing for information and ask the public to call 101 quoting 44250213949.
